The Captives is an interactive sculpture that beckons viewers to act. Mice are trapped in a glass case equipped with a motion sensor. As the mice run around searching for a way out or a place to hide their movements trigger messages spoken and printed that plead with viewers to open the case to set them free by turning a key in the large lock that imprisons them. Desperate letters stack up in front of the case as they are printed and dispensed, illustrating to viewers the long imprisonment and suffering of the captives.

The Captive was created using an EZIO card that bridges external inputs from the motion sensor to custom software created with Macromedia Director.
